AZ-305 vs AWS Solutions Architect Professional: The Expert-Tier Fork

This is the head-to-head at the top of the two biggest cloud architecture ladders: Microsoft’s Expert tier against AWS’s Professional tier, both mapping to the same computer network architect occupation (SOC 15-1241), both aimed at people already making design decisions for a living. The exams are comparable in seniority and in the experience they quietly assume. Almost everything else about how you buy, sit, and keep them is asymmetric, and those asymmetries are the useful part of this page.

What it takes to even sit them

AZ-305 is the only exam here with a hard gate. Microsoft will not post the Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification until you hold an active Azure Administrator Associate, the credential behind AZ-104. Pass AZ-305 without it and you own a passed exam and no certification. And because AZ-104 is itself a one-year credential, it can quietly lapse before you sit the Expert exam, which reopens the same hole.

SAP-C02 has no prerequisite at all. AWS recommends two or more years of hands-on experience designing and deploying cloud solutions, and the exam’s long multi-service scenarios enforce that recommendation better than any formal gate would, but nothing stops a candidate from booking it cold. The practical sequencing on the AWS side is softer: most people climb through Solutions Architect Associate first because the roles demand it, not because AWS does.

Sticker price against the real floor

Quote the two stickers side by side, $165 for AZ-305 against $300 for SAP-C02, and Azure looks like the bargain. The prerequisite erases that. From a standing start the Expert badge costs two exams, AZ-104 plus AZ-305 at $165 each, so $330 is the honest Azure floor, and neither stage includes a free retake: a failed attempt is another $165 after a 24-hour wait, with 14-day waits between later attempts.

AWS charges $300 for the single exam with no free retake and a 14-day wait between attempts. But AWS runs one discount Microsoft does not: any active AWS certification earns a 50 percent voucher toward your next exam, so a current Associate holder’s first crack at Professional costs $150, not $300. Read honestly, the entry math is close to a tie: $330 on Azure against $300 rack rate on AWS, or $150 if you kept an Associate active on the way up. Budget a cushion for one bad day on either path, $660 on Azure, $600 on AWS at rack rate.

Two exams, two shapes

AZ-305 is a design exam: typically 40 to 60 questions over about 100 minutes, leaning on case studies, with none of the live labs AZ-104 can include, passing at 700 of 1,000. Its current outline, dated April 17, 2026, weights design of infrastructure solutions at 30 to 35 percent, identity, governance, and monitoring at 25 to 30 percent, data storage at 20 to 25 percent, and business continuity at 15 to 20 percent. SAP-C02 is an endurance exam: 75 questions in 180 minutes, about 2.4 minutes per multi-paragraph scenario, passing at 750 on the 100-to-1,000 scale, with domains spanning complex organizations, new solutions, continuous improvement, and migration and modernization. Neither vendor publishes a pass rate, so every percentage you see quoted is invented.

Renewal: free forever against retake forever

Here the two programs genuinely diverge. AZ-305 is valid one year and renews free: an open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn, available in the six months before expiry, unlimited attempts, no fee, no grace period if you miss it. The catch is that the Expert badge leaves you running two annual clocks, AZ-104 and AZ-305 each with its own window, and missing either means re-buying a $165 exam. Nine years of ownership: $330 once, then $0 in renewal fees if you never miss a window.

SAP-C02 is valid three years, and because Professional is the top of the AWS architecture path, no higher certification exists to renew it as a side effect. Your options are retaking the current exam, $150 per cycle with the 50 percent voucher or $300 without it, or the paid AWS Skill Builder maintain path that extends one year at a time on a subscription. Nine years runs about $600 with vouchers, $900 at rack rate. Not ruinous, but structurally different: Microsoft’s renewal is a free habit, AWS’s is a recurring purchase. The decision is the ecosystem, not the exam

Both credentials certify the same kind of judgment for the same occupation, and neither transfers its weight into the other vendor’s shops. So the deciding input is which cloud your employer, or the employer you want, actually runs, and at this tier you already know: these are consolidation credentials for architects doing the work, not speculative bets for people choosing a first cloud. Sit the exam for the estate you design in. Holding both is defensible only for genuinely multi-cloud consultants who bill across ecosystems, and even then, sequence them so an active lower AWS cert is feeding the voucher.

Common mistakes

Booking AZ-305 without an active AZ-104. The defining Azure trap: the Expert certification does not post until the prerequisite is on your transcript and current. Verify before you schedule.

Letting the AWS Associate lapse on the climb. That expiry forfeits the 50 percent voucher and turns a $150 Professional attempt into $300, twice if you need a retake. Keeping the lower cert active is the cheapest insurance in the AWS program.

Treating the sticker gap as the decision. $165 against $300 is not the real comparison; $330 with free renewals against $300-then-$150-per-cycle is. Over nine years the totals land close enough that ecosystem fit should decide, not price.
