Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305): The AZ-104 Prerequisite, Cost, and Free Renewal

Most certifications on this site can be earned in a single sitting. This one cannot, and the reason is the single most important fact about it. AZ-305 is the exam behind the Azure Solutions Architect Expert credential, but passing AZ-305 by itself earns you nothing but a passed exam. Microsoft will not grant the Expert certification until you also hold a separate certification first. The prerequisite that catches people out

That associate credential is the one behind AZ-104. So the honest path to this Expert badge is two exams in sequence: AZ-104 first, then AZ-305. Score 700 or better on AZ-305 without an active AZ-104 on your transcript, and the certification simply does not post; you are holding a passed exam and a missing prerequisite.

There is a timing wrinkle that compounds this. AZ-104 is itself a one-year certification (see its own renewal treadmill), so it can lapse. Sit AZ-305 during a stretch when your AZ-104 has quietly expired and you are back in the same hole. The clean sequence is: earn or renew AZ-104, confirm it is active, then book AZ-305 while that window is open.

Who should take it, and who should wait

This is a senior credential for people already doing Azure architecture: translating business requirements into designs across compute, networking, storage, monitoring, and security, and advising the administrators, developers, and security engineers who build them. Microsoft’s audience profile assumes advanced experience across Azure administration, Azure development, and DevOps. That is not a starting point; it is a mid-to-senior engineer consolidating a role they already occupy.

Skip it, or rather wait, if you do not yet hold AZ-104 and do not have real Azure hours behind you. The exam is a design exam: it hands you case studies and asks you to choose between defensible architectures under stated constraints, which is unforgiving to anyone who has only read about the services. If your Azure vocabulary is still forming, start at AZ-900, then earn AZ-104, and treat AZ-305 as the third step, not the first. What it costs all-in

The AZ-305 exam is $165, Microsoft’s standard Associate and Expert price, set per country and currency with tax added in some regions. But quoting $165 as the cost of this certification is the mistake the prerequisite creates. The real all-in floor is two exams, AZ-104 at $165 plus AZ-305 at $165, so $330 is the honest number to earn the Expert badge from a standing start. There is no free retake at either stage; a failed attempt is another $165 after a 24-hour wait, with 14-day waits between later attempts, so $660 is the prudent cushion if you want to survive a bad day on either exam.

The exam itself

Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count and says its exams typically carry 40 to 60 questions; AZ-305 runs about 100 minutes and leans on case studies, the multi-question scenarios that mimic real architecture decisions. As a design exam it does not include the live labs that AZ-104 can. Passing is 700 on a 1,000-point scale, and Microsoft publishes no pass rate, so any figure you see quoted is invented.

Four domains make up the exam, weighted in bands rather than exact percentages: design identity, governance, and monitoring solutions (25 to 30 percent), design data storage solutions (20 to 25 percent), design business continuity solutions (15 to 20 percent), and design infrastructure solutions (30 to 35 percent). The bands bracket 100 percent. Note the shape: infrastructure design carries the largest slice, but identity, governance, and monitoring together with data storage make up more than half the exam, so a candidate who prepped only on virtual machines and networking is aiming at the wrong half.

Renewal math over 9 years

The renewal model is the same free annual assessment that Microsoft applies to its associate tier, confirmed for expert-level certifications by Microsoft’s own expiration policy: role-based associate and expert certifications are valid for exactly one year, and you renew at no cost by passing an online, open-book assessment on Microsoft Learn in the six months before expiry. Miss the window and there is no grace period; the certification expires and the only way back is the full $165 exam again.

So the fee math over nine years is $330 once (the two exams to earn it), then $0 in renewal fees. The catch is that you are now running two annual clocks, not one: AZ-104 and AZ-305 are separate credentials, each with its own yearly free assessment and its own window to miss. What it does for the occupation you are entering

Common mistakes

Booking AZ-305 without an active AZ-104. This is the defining trap. The Expert certification will not post until the associate prerequisite is on your transcript and current. Confirm AZ-104 is active before you schedule.

Treating $165 as the price. From a standing start the cost is two exams, so $330 minimum, and more if either needs a retake. Budget for the pair, not the single sitting.

Running only one renewal reminder. Earning the Expert badge leaves you maintaining two one-year credentials, each with its own free assessment window. Two calendar entries, not one.
