Ask ten engineers what “get an AWS cert” means by default and most of them mean this one. Solutions Architect Associate is the exam that tests whether you can actually design something on AWS, not just recognize service names, and it is the certification hiring managers most often mean when a job posting lists “AWS certification” as a plus. This page covers the real cost, the exact exam format, all four domain weights, and what nine years of renewal adds up to, checked against AWS’s own pages on the date at the top.
Who this cert is actually for
SAA targets people who design AWS solutions, or want to: cloud engineers, infrastructure architects, and developers moving into an architecture-adjacent role. AWS’s own recommendation is at least a year of hands-on experience designing cloud solutions on AWS, though the exam guide also notes candidates with one to three years of general IT experience have prepared successfully without dedicated architecture experience first.
If you are starting from zero AWS exposure, AWS Cloud Practitioner is the more honest starting point; SAA’s Well-Architected Framework content assumes you already know what a VPC, an IAM policy, and an Availability Zone are, and cramming that vocabulary at the same time as architecture trade-offs is a slower path than learning it first. Skip straight past SAA if your job is already deep security work rather than general architecture; AWS Security Specialty tests that material at far more depth than SAA’s Design Secure Architectures domain ever will. And if your target role is Cisco-flavored network engineering rather than cloud architecture, compare this against Cisco CCNA before committing your study hours to one ecosystem over the other. If your infrastructure runs on Azure instead, Microsoft Azure Administrator (AZ-104) is the closest counterpart, though it tests hands-on administration rather than design judgment; AWS SAA vs AZ-104 covers that distinction in full.
What it costs all-in
The voucher is $150 direct from AWS, with no discount tier for the general public and no free retake. A failed attempt costs another $150, so budgeting for a cushion against a bad day means treating $300 as the real number to plan around rather than $150.
You do not need a paid bootcamp to pass this. AWS’s own exam guide is the literal blueprint, and AWS Skill Builder’s free digital courses cover the same domains a $300 bootcamp repackages. A well-regarded Udemy course from a recognized AWS instructor runs $15 to $20 on sale, and a dedicated SAA practice-exam set in the $15 to $25 range is the one paid item worth buying without hesitation, since the scenario-based questions punish anyone who has only read about services and never had to choose between three plausible-sounding architectures under time pressure. A realistic self-study budget is $150 for the voucher plus $30 to $45 in prep. See how that stacks up against every other credential on the ROI Index.
The exam itself
You get 65 questions in 130 minutes: 50 scored plus 15 unscored questions AWS mixes in unlabeled to calibrate future exams. Questions are multiple-choice or multiple-response, scored on a 100-to-1,000 scale, with 720 as the passing bar.
The exam has exactly four domains, all built around designing rather than merely describing: Design Secure Architectures (30 percent, the largest share and a reminder that security is not a side topic even on a general architecture exam), Design Resilient Architectures (26 percent), Design High-Performing Architectures (24 percent), and Design Cost-Optimized Architectures (20 percent). Those four weights sum to exactly 100 percent. AWS does not publish a pass rate, so any specific figure you see quoted online is not a real, verifiable number.
One useful framing: every domain name starts with the word “Design.” AWS explicitly states the exam validates a candidate’s ability to design solutions and review existing ones for improvement, and out-of-scope tasks like hands-on implementation and low-level troubleshooting sit outside this exam’s job even though they show up constantly in day-to-day architect work.
Renewal math over 9 years
SAA is valid for three years, so nine years covers three renewal cycles. AWS charges no annual maintenance fee, unlike ISC2’s model.
Retaking the current SAA exam every cycle costs 3 times $150, or $450 across nine years. The other documented path is earning AWS Solutions Architect Professional, a considerably harder exam, which automatically recertifies the Associate credential the moment you pass it. That path is not a cheaper renewal hack so much as a career move that happens to solve renewal as a side effect; do not chase Professional purely to save money on Associate renewal if the harder exam is not otherwise where your career is headed. Budget the straightforward $450 over nine years if SAA is your ceiling, or treat renewal as free the year you pass Professional if that is genuinely your trajectory.
What it does for the occupation you are entering
SAA maps most directly to the computer network architect occupation (BLS code 15-1241), the BLS category built around designing and building the networks and systems SAA’s own domains cover: secure, resilient, high-performing, cost-optimized architecture. The panel on this page shows that occupation’s current national median wage and headcount, a description of the field, not a number this certificate pays out on its own. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks this occupation as a solidly growing field, and what SAA concretely buys you is a credential hiring filters recognize as evidence you can reason about trade-offs across an AWS environment, not a guaranteed dollar figure attached to the badge itself. What you get paid depends on the role, the employer, and the experience you bring beyond the exam.
Common mistakes
Attempting SAA before basic AWS vocabulary is solid. Candidates who skip Cloud Practitioner-level fundamentals often burn study time relearning what a subnet or an IAM role is instead of practicing the architecture trade-off questions the exam actually tests. Shore up fundamentals first if they are shaky.
Memorizing services instead of practicing trade-offs. SAA rewards candidates who can choose between three technically valid architectures based on cost, resilience, or performance constraints stated in the question, not candidates who can merely recite what each service does. Scenario-based practice questions matter more here than flashcards.
Chasing Professional purely as a renewal shortcut. SAA-Professional is a meaningfully harder exam built for people already doing senior architecture work. Treat the auto-recertification as a bonus of a career move you were making anyway, not a reason to attempt an exam you are not otherwise ready for.

- Passing any AWS exam puts a 50 percent voucher for your next one in your AWS Certification account, valid 12 months, and it chains: each pass earns a new one. Certified holders also get a free official practice set.
- Served in the military? The GI Bill reimburses approved certification tests up to $2,000 per test (check the VA's approved list before booking), and VR&E can cover costs directly for eligible veterans.
- Employed? Ask about certification reimbursement before you pay anything; many employers cover the exam outright or on a pass, and some cover renewals.
- Vendors announce price increases ahead of time and vouchers stay valid for months, so a ready candidate can buy at the old price; increases land in the price watch as we verify them.
