The exam itself

You get 65 questions in 130 minutes: 50 scored plus 15 unscored questions AWS mixes in unlabeled to calibrate future exams. Questions are multiple-choice or multiple-response, scored on a 100-to-1,000 scale, with 720 as the passing bar.

Retaking the current SAA exam every cycle costs 3 times $150, or $450 across nine years. The other documented path is earning AWS Solutions Architect Professional, a considerably harder exam, which automatically recertifies the Associate credential the moment you pass it. That path is not a cheaper renewal hack so much as a career move that happens to solve renewal as a side effect; do not chase Professional purely to save money on Associate renewal if the harder exam is not otherwise where your career is headed. Memorizing services instead of practicing trade-offs.
