Occupation context

$134,050

BLS median, Computer Network Architects (May 2025)

179,740 people employed nationally

Salary figures are U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics medians for the occupation shown, not a measured premium for holding this certification. No one publishes causal cert premiums; anyone quoting one is guessing.

How to prepare

No single standard third-party course or practice set for this exam yet. Check the vendor's own exam guide and free objectives first.

Solutions Architect Professional is the exam most people should not sit yet. It is the top of the AWS architecture ladder, it costs twice what the Associate does, and it fails a lot of capable engineers who walked in because the badge looked like the logical next step rather than because their job actually demanded it. This page is the honest case for waiting, alongside the real cost, the exam format, and what nine years of recertification runs, all checked against AWS’s own pages on the date at the top.

The short verdict

Skip this until Solutions Architect Associate is already paying off in your work, and until you are personally making cross-account, multi-region, or migration-scale design decisions on AWS most weeks. SAP-C02 is not “the Associate but harder.” It is a different exam that assumes you already argue about organizational units, hybrid connectivity, cost governance across dozens of accounts, and migration strategy as part of your day job. If that is not you yet, the money and the study hours both return more on the Associate and real project work.

Who should sit it, and who should wait

The right candidate is a working architect or senior cloud engineer with a couple of years of hands-on AWS design behind them, aiming at a role where “SA Pro” appears in the requirements rather than the nice-to-haves: lead architect, principal engineer, or a consulting or partner track where AWS competency tiers matter to the employer’s certification count. AWS recommends two or more years of experience designing and deploying cloud solutions on AWS, and that recommendation is doing real work here in a way it is not on the entry exams. The professional exam’s scenarios are long, multi-service, and written to punish pattern-matching.

Wait if you are still learning what a VPC peering connection or a Transit Gateway is; that vocabulary is assumed, not taught, by the questions. Wait, too, if your goal is simply “another AWS cert” for a resume: the Associate already clears most hiring filters that scan for AWS architecture competence, and stacking Professional on thin experience reads as ambition outrunning depth to anyone senior enough to interview you for the roles it targets. And if your actual trajectory is developer tooling or operations rather than architecture, AWS Developer Associate or AWS CloudOps Engineer Associate is the more honest spend.

Cost, and the retakes AWS never comps

The exam is $300 direct from AWS, the Professional and Specialty tier price, double the $150 Associate exams. There is no free retake anywhere in the AWS program. A failed attempt costs another full $300, and AWS makes you wait 14 calendar days before you can sit it again. Because this exam has a real failure rate for underprepared candidates, the number to budget against is not $300 but $600, so a single bad day does not blow up your plan.

One discount does exist and it is easy to miss: holding any active AWS certification earns a 50 percent discount voucher toward your next exam. If you already hold the Associate and it is still active, your first crack at Professional can cost $150 rather than $300. That voucher is the single biggest reason to keep a lower AWS cert active while you climb rather than letting it lapse.

You do not need a paid bootcamp. AWS’s SAP-C02 exam guide is the blueprint, AWS Skill Builder carries free digital training, and a strong instructor-led Udemy course plus a professional-level practice-exam set (the one paid item genuinely worth buying, because the trap on this exam is misjudging readiness against its scenario length) runs $30 to $60 combined. See how the all-in figure lands against every other credential on the ROI Index.

Inside the exam: 75 scenarios in 180 minutes

You get 75 questions in 180 minutes, multiple-choice or multiple-response, scored on the 100-to-1,000 scale with 750 as the passing bar (the Professional and Specialty threshold, higher than the Associate’s 720). That is 2.4 minutes per question, and the questions are long: multi-paragraph scenarios describing an existing environment and asking for the best design change under stated constraints, often with two answers that both technically work and only one that fits the cost, resilience, or operational requirement the prompt buried in the third sentence. Reading speed and the discipline to not overthink are as tested here as AWS knowledge.

The exam guide organizes the content into design-and-improvement domains covering complex organizations, new solutions, continuous improvement for existing solutions, and migration and modernization. AWS does not publish a pass rate, so any “X percent pass” figure you find quoted is invented, not sourced.

Recertification math

SAP-C02 is valid for three years, and unlike ISC2 or GIAC there is no annual maintenance fee attached to it. Because Professional is the top of this path, there is no higher certification that auto-recertifies it. That leaves two routes on AWS’s recertification page: retake the current exam before it expires, or use the newer maintain option on AWS Skill Builder, which extends the certification one year at a time and requires a paid Skill Builder subscription. Treat the subscription path as worthwhile only if you would pay for Skill Builder’s training content anyway; as a pure renewal vehicle, the discounted retake below is usually the cheaper move.

Over nine years that is three sittings (at years zero, three, and six keep you continuously certified through year nine). At full price that is 3 times $300, or $900. But if you keep a certification active, each recert qualifies for the 50 percent voucher, which turns the two renewals into $150 each: $300 up front plus $150 plus $150 is $600 across nine years. Budget $600 if you stay continuously certified and use the voucher, or $900 if you let it lapse and pay rack rate each time. Either way there is no fee for simply holding the credential between exams, which makes AWS cheaper to keep than most security credentials on this site even though its exam costs more up front. See certification renewal costs explained for the cross-registry comparison.

The occupation this maps to

SAP-C02 maps most directly to the computer network architect occupation (BLS code 15-1241), the category built around designing and building the systems this exam’s domains cover at organizational scale. The panel on this page shows that occupation’s current national median wage and headcount. Read it as a description of the field, not a premium the badge pays out: no dataset isolates a wage bump for a specific certification, so this site never invents one. What Professional concretely signals is that you can reason about trade-offs across a large, multi-account AWS estate, which is exactly the judgment the senior architecture roles it targets are screening for. The pay follows the role and the experience, not the card.

Traps that sink otherwise-ready candidates

Treating it as the Associate with harder questions. The failure mode is a strong SAA holder who studies the same material one level deeper and gets blindsided by the organizational and migration scenarios that the Associate barely touches. Study the Professional exam guide’s domains on their own terms.

Letting a lower cert lapse and forfeiting the voucher. People let the Associate expire, then pay full $300 for the Professional attempt and full $300 for a retake, when keeping the Associate active would have made both $150. Track your expiration dates.

Sitting it to prove readiness rather than because a role needs it. At $300 a miss and a real failure rate, this is the wrong exam to take as a self-test. Confirm readiness with timed professional-level practice questions first, and confirm the certification is actually required for where you are headed before spending the hours; is AWS Solutions Architect worth it works through that call.

Pay less for this exam

The legitimate ways to pay under list price for AWS Solutions Architect Professional, verified in the discounts guide. No coupon codes, no gray-market vouchers.

  • Passing any AWS exam puts a 50 percent voucher for your next one in your AWS Certification account, valid 12 months, and it chains: each pass earns a new one. Certified holders also get a free official practice set.
  • Served in the military? The GI Bill reimburses approved certification tests up to $2,000 per test (check the VA's approved list before booking), and VR&E can cover costs directly for eligible veterans.
  • Employed? Ask about certification reimbursement before you pay anything; many employers cover the exam outright or on a pass, and some cover renewals.
  • Vendors announce price increases ahead of time and vouchers stay valid for months, so a ready candidate can buy at the old price; increases land in the price watch as we verify them.
