2nd Edition, published specifically to cover the February 2024 v1.1 exam-topics refresh; the current standard Cisco Press guide for this exam. The last day to test on v1.1 is February 2, 2027; CCNA v2.0 starts February 3, 2027 under the same 200-301 number.
- Practice exam

Boson
Boson's own exam guide explicitly references the v1.1 topic set, which is testable through February 2, 2027. The standard third-party practice exam for Cisco certifications.
Cisco built its own certification ladder while the vendor-neutral CompTIA path was busy proving general competence, and CCNA is the rung where that ladder starts. It certifies the person who actually configures the switches and routers other credentials only ask you to describe in the abstract. Here is what the exam actually costs, what it tests, and what nine years of staying certified runs, all checked against Cisco’s own published pages on the date at the top. One date matters more than any other this year: the current v1.1 exam ends on February 2, 2027, and v2.0 replaces it the next day.
Who this cert is actually for
CCNA targets people moving into a hands-on networking role: junior network administrator, NOC technician, or a help desk tech ready to own the switches and routers instead of just escalating tickets about them. Cisco built the exam around a single generalist blueprint that spans routing and switching fundamentals through security basics and automation, so it suits someone building broad networking competence rather than specializing early. It pairs naturally with CompTIA Network+ for candidates who want both a vendor-neutral and a vendor-specific credential on the resume; Network+ vs CCNA settles which of the two to sit first.
Skip it if your target employer runs an all-cloud or all-non-Cisco shop; the exam content is Cisco-specific (IOS syntax, Cisco device behavior), and that specificity does not transfer cleanly to, say, a pure AWS networking role. Skip it too if you are already a working network engineer with years on Cisco gear and no resume gap to fill; at that point a professional-level Cisco track or CompTIA Security+ for a security pivot is a better use of the money than re-proving fundamentals you use daily; Security+ vs CCNA lays out that fork directly.
What it costs all-in
The exam voucher is $300 USD, paid to Cisco directly or through Pearson VUE, the authorized testing partner. There is no free retake, so a failed attempt costs the same $300 again. Cisco requires a five-calendar-day wait before a retest. Students enrolled through a Cisco Networking Academy program can sometimes access a discounted voucher, but that path requires program enrollment rather than being open to any self-studier.
Free and low-cost prep covers most of what candidates need. Cisco’s own exam topics list functions as the syllabus, and free full-length video courses exist from well-known CCNA instructors. A Udemy course runs $15 to $20 on sale, and a practice-exam bank is worth another $15 to $30, since the interactive simulation items punish anyone who has only read about configuring a VLAN and never actually typed the commands. Budget roughly $300 for the voucher plus $30 to $60 in prep for a disciplined self-study path; that combined figure is the number worth comparing against every other credential on the ROI Index.
The exam itself
CCNA runs 120 minutes and mixes multiple-choice questions with drag-and-drop items and hands-on simulation tasks. Cisco does not publish a question count for the exam, and it does not publish passing scores either, stating that they vary and can change without notice; grading is pass or fail. Treat any specific number quoted elsewhere as an estimate. The v1.1 exam covers six weighted domains: Network Fundamentals (20 percent), Network Access (20 percent), IP Connectivity (25 percent, the single heaviest domain and the one built around routing behavior), IP Services (10 percent), Security Fundamentals (15 percent), and Automation and Programmability (10 percent).
Version 1.1 has a fixed end date. Cisco has announced CCNA v2.0: the last day to test on v1.1 is February 2, 2027, and v2.0 goes live February 3, 2027, keeping the 200-301 exam number. The v2.0 exam topics collapse six domains into five: Network Infrastructure and Connectivity (25 percent), Switching and Network Access (25 percent), IP Routing (20 percent), Network Services and Security (20 percent), and AI, and Network Operations and Management (10 percent). Cisco’s v2.0 description adds that you may be asked to evaluate output and recommendations from agentic AI and digital network assistants, and its objectives lean far harder on troubleshooting and diagnosis than v1.1’s describe-and-configure list. There is no separate written-plus-lab split the way some higher Cisco tracks work; everything is folded into the one 120-minute sitting. Cisco does not publish a pass rate, so ignore any specific percentage circulating on prep sites.
Renewal math over 9 years
CCNA is valid for three years, so nine years of holding it means two renewals, at years three and six (a renewal at year nine buys years nine to twelve, outside the horizon). The cheapest path is 30 continuing education (CE) credits per cycle, earned through a mix of Cisco Live sessions, qualifying training, and other approved activities, at no separate recertification fee from Cisco itself; your only cost is the time spent gathering and logging credits. Retaking the current 200-301 exam every three years also renews the credential, but at $300 a sitting that is the more expensive route unless you actually want the refresher.
The move that erases the renewal question entirely: Cisco’s CCNA page lists passing any higher-level Cisco certification exam (a CCNP core or concentration exam, for example) as a recertification option, so climbing the ladder renews CCNA at the same time. So the honest nine-year range is $0 in dedicated CE fees if you keep logging credits or keep leveling up, versus $600 across the two renewals if you choose to retake the base exam every time instead.
Nine-year cost of ownership: $300 to $900, the $300 exam with nothing added if you log free CE credits or climb the Cisco ladder, up to $900 if you retake the base exam every cycle instead of renewing for free. The cheap-path end is one of the lowest true costs of ownership on this site. Certification renewal costs explained places it against every other credential.
What it does for the occupation you are entering
CCNA maps most directly to the network and computer systems administrator occupation (BLS code 15-1244), the closest published BLS category to the hands-on router-and-switch work the exam certifies. The panel on this page shows the current national median wage and headcount for that occupation. Read that as a description of the field CCNA opens a door into, not a raise the certificate hands you directly. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks steady demand in this occupation as organizations keep expanding and securing their network infrastructure, and that demand is why the credential still appears as a named requirement in so many networking job postings. What CCNA concretely buys is a resume line that recruiters searching for “CCNA” will actually surface, plus enough hands-on Cisco fluency to be useful in week one. Turning that into a specific salary depends on the employer, the region, and the experience you bring beyond the certificate.
Common mistakes
Memorizing commands instead of building a lab. The simulation items test whether you can actually configure a device under time pressure, not whether you can recognize a command in a multiple-choice list. A free packet-tracer style lab environment closes that gap for a fraction of the cost of a bootcamp.
Treating CCNA as a lifetime credential. Three years passes faster than it seems, and letting it lapse means starting the CE-credit clock over or paying $300 again for a fresh attempt. Set a renewal reminder at the two-year mark and pick a CE path early.
Studying for the wrong version. v2.0 is a real blueprint change, not a cosmetic refresh: five domains instead of six, a new AI and operations domain, and heavier troubleshooting. If you can sit the exam by February 2, 2027 and are well into v1.1 material, finish and test on v1.1; your CCNA stays valid for its full three years either way. If your test date will land on or after February 3, 2027, study from the v2.0 exam topics.
Pay less for this exam
The legitimate ways to pay under list price for Cisco CCNA, verified in the discounts guide. No coupon codes, no gray-market vouchers.
- Completing an eligible Cisco Networking Academy course with 70 percent or better on the final (first attempt) earns a substantial exam discount voucher, commonly around half off.
- Served in the military? The GI Bill reimburses approved certification tests up to $2,000 per test (check the VA's approved list before booking), and VR&E can cover costs directly for eligible veterans.
- Employed? Ask about certification reimbursement before you pay anything; many employers cover the exam outright or on a pass, and some cover renewals.
- Vendors announce price increases ahead of time and vouchers stay valid for months, so a ready candidate can buy at the old price; increases land in the price watch as we verify them.
