Who this cert is actually for

SecAI+ is a specialization, not an entry point. CompTIA’s own recommended background is 3 to 4 years in IT with at least 2 of them hands-on in cybersecurity, holding Security+, CySA+, PenTest+, or the equivalent. The people it fits are working security practitioners whose environments are absorbing AI systems faster than their security playbooks can keep up: analysts asked to assess LLM-powered tools, engineers securing model pipelines, and consultants who need a credential that says they understand AI-specific attack surfaces like prompt injection and model poisoning alongside conventional controls.

Skip it if you are still working toward your first security role; employers screening entry candidates look for Security+, and no AI specialization compensates for missing fundamentals. Skip it too if your AI interest is broader than security: AWS AI Practitioner and the other AI credentials in the registry cover general AI fluency at a fraction of the commitment. And weigh the early-adopter risk honestly: a certification launched months ago has no resume track record, so its value today is the knowledge and the conversation it starts, not a proven hiring filter.

What it costs all-in

The exam voucher is $298 at CompTIA’s own store, notably below the $439 that Security+ and CySA+ vouchers cost after the 2026 price increase. CompTIA also sells the voucher with retake assurance at $332 and a complete bundle with its CertMaster training and a retake at $628; the training products (CertMaster Perform at $508, Labs at $147, Study at $118) are optional and not required to sit the exam.

Renewal follows the standard CompTIA Continuing Education model: the certification is valid for 3 years and renews through CEUs earned from approved training, activities, or related certifications, or by passing a qualifying higher-level CompTIA exam. The CE fee for SecAI+ is $75 per 3-year cycle, the same tier as A+ and half of Security+‘s $150. The exam itself

CY0-001 runs a maximum of 60 questions in 60 minutes, mixing multiple-choice with performance-based items, and passes at 600 on CompTIA’s 100-to-900 scale. That is a tighter time budget than most CompTIA exams (Security+ allows 90 minutes), so pacing matters: a performance-based item that eats five minutes costs proportionally more here. The exam is currently offered in English only, and CompTIA estimates this exam version will retire about 3 years after launch, its standard cadence. CompTIA does not publish pass rates for any of its exams.

Renewal math over 9 years

Nine years is three CE cycles: $75 each, $225 total, plus the CEU activity itself, which can be free (approved webinars, work activities) or paid (training). Passing a qualifying higher-level CompTIA exam renews SecAI+ automatically, and because SecAI+ sits in CompTIA’s cybersecurity pathway, holders of SecurityX or other higher-tier credentials fold its renewal into theirs. The honest floor: $298 entry plus $225 in CE fees, about $523 over nine years, cheaper to hold than most of CompTIA’s security line.

What it does for the occupation you are entering

SecAI+ maps to the information security analyst occupation (BLS code 15-1212), the same category as the rest of the security registry. Common mistakes

Buying it as a first cert. The 60-minute, performance-based format assumes working security knowledge. Without the recommended 2+ years of hands-on experience, the exam and the credential both underdeliver; start at Security+.
