CompTIA PenTest+ (PT0-003): Cost, Exam Format, and Renewal Math

Getting paid to break into systems, instead of getting arrested for it, requires proof that you know where the line is and how to document what you find on the right side of it. PenTest+ is CompTIA’s attempt to certify exactly that combination of offensive skill and professional judgment. Here is the real cost, what the exam covers, and what nine years of renewal actually runs.

Who this cert is actually for

PenTest+ targets people already doing, or about to move into, hands-on offensive security work: penetration testers, red team members, and vulnerability assessment specialists who need to plan engagements, exploit findings, and write reports a client’s legal team will not flinch at. CompTIA recommends three to four years in a pentester role plus Network+ and Security+ or equivalent knowledge, and unlike the entry-level certs on this site, this exam assumes you can already read a scope document and a rules-of-engagement letter before you sit down. PenTest+ vs CEH is the natural next comparison if a posting could reasonably ask for either.

Skip it if you have not done any hands-on offensive work yet; a home lab and some exposure to platforms built for practicing exploitation will teach you more per hour than a cert study guide will at this stage, and you will pass PT0-003 faster once you have that background. Skip it too if your actual interest is defense and detection rather than attack. CySA+ is the sibling credential aimed at the blue-team side of the same skill tier, and conflating the two wastes a voucher.

At the senior end, someone with years of red-team leadership and an OSCP or equivalent advanced offensive credential already has stronger market signal than PT0-003 provides, and their study time is better spent on a specialization like cloud or Active Directory exploitation than on this exam. What it costs all-in

The PT0-003 exam voucher is $439 direct from CompTIA as of CompTIA’s 2026 price increase, up from $425 before it, across CompTIA’s security-certification lineup. That is the figure to use for any comparison, and there is no discount on a retake; a failed attempt costs the full $439 again. Planning for roughly one and a half vouchers, about $660, buys a cushion against one bad exam day.

CompTIA’s exam objectives document is free and is the actual source the questions are written from. A paid video course from a provider like Jason Dion runs $20 to $30 on sale, and given how heavily this exam weights hands-on exploitation, a lab environment or practice-range subscription in the $20 to $50 range is arguably more valuable prep than any video course. A realistic self-study total lands near $439 for the voucher plus $40 to $80 in prep and lab time, and authorized partners commonly discount 10 to 15 percent off list. The exam itself

PT0-003 caps at 90 questions in 165 minutes, the longest sitting time of any exam covered on this page, and needs a 750 on the 100-to-900 scale to pass. Five domains make up the exam: Engagement Management (13 percent), Reconnaissance and Enumeration (21 percent), Vulnerability Discovery and Analysis (17 percent), Attacks and Exploits, which carries the largest weight by far at 35 percent, and Post-Exploitation and Lateral Movement (14 percent). That heavy weighting toward Attacks and Exploits is the exam’s center of gravity; expect performance-based questions built around live exploitation chains rather than isolated recall.

Engagement Management, the smallest domain at 13 percent, is the one candidates with real hacking skill most often underestimate; it covers scoping, legal authorization, and reporting, and it is exactly the professional-judgment layer that separates a certified pentester from someone who just knows the tools. CompTIA does not publish a pass rate for PT0-003, so ignore any specific percentage you see quoted for it.

Renewal math over 9 years

PenTest+ is valid for three years, so nine years covers three cycles, and each one requires 60 CEUs, the same count as CySA+ and the highest tier on this page. PenTest+ sits in the $150-per-cycle CE fee tier, and CertMaster CE is not offered for this certification, so unlike A+, Network+, or Security+, there is no self-paced course that auto-fulfills the requirement and waives the fee.

The realistic renewal routes are: accumulate 60 CEUs through approved training, conference attendance, or documented offensive-security work and pay the $150 fee each cycle, for $450 total across nine years; earn an accepted non-CompTIA certification for full CEU credit; or pass the current version of the PenTest+ exam itself, which also renews the certification. Earning a higher-level CompTIA certification renews PenTest+ automatically and waives the fee as well, so the nine-year figure is $450 if this stays your ceiling, trending toward $0 in dedicated renewal spend if you keep advancing.

What it does for the occupation you are entering

PenTest+ maps to the information security analyst occupation (BLS code 15-1212), the same broad occupation CySA+ and Security+ map to. What PenTest+ concretely does is give a hiring manager evidence that you understand both the technical exploitation chain and the legal, documentation-heavy side of engagement work, which matters enormously in a discipline where an undocumented action can end a client relationship or a career. What that becomes in pay depends on the firm and the engagements you land, not the exam score.

Common mistakes

Chasing PenTest+ before any hands-on offensive practice. The exam’s PBQs assume you have actually run reconnaissance and exploitation workflows before; skipping straight from theory to the exam is the most common way to fail it once, at full voucher price.

Underweighting Engagement Management in study time. It is the smallest domain by percentage, but it is also where technically skilled candidates lose points, because scoping and legal authorization rarely get practiced the way exploitation techniques do.

Assuming CertMaster CE will handle renewal. It does not cover PenTest+ at all, so anyone banking on the same auto-renew convenience Security+ or Network+ offer will find out only when the three-year clock is nearly up.
