Ultimate AWS Certified Developer Associate 2026 DVA-C02 (Stephane Maarek)
Udemy
Stephane Maarek's Developer Associate course, updated for DVA-C02 (July 2026 revision verified). A Udemy course; not a voucher and unrelated to the exam fee.
The name on this credential misleads people. “Developer Associate” sounds like a coding exam, and it is not one: you will not be asked to reverse a linked list or write a sorting function. DVA-C02 tests whether you can build, deploy, secure, and debug an application using AWS’s own services and tooling, which is a different skill from writing algorithms and a different skill from designing infrastructure. Here is what it costs, what it actually tests, and what renewal adds up to, all verified against AWS on the date above.
Who it is for, and the misconception in the name
This exam suits software engineers and application developers already working on or moving toward AWS-hosted applications: people writing code that calls the AWS SDKs, deploying through pipelines, wiring up Lambda functions, reading and writing DynamoDB, and troubleshooting why an IAM policy is blocking a call. AWS recommends about a year of hands-on experience developing and maintaining applications on AWS, and that experience is what the exam rewards.
Be clear-eyed about the overlap with architecture. A large slice of DVA-C02 covers the same AWS services as Solutions Architect Associate: IAM, VPC basics, S3, DynamoDB, and the security and deployment surface. The difference is point of view. The Architect exam asks which design fits the constraints; the Developer exam asks how you implement, instrument, and debug it in code and configuration. If you are choosing one AWS Associate exam and your job is building applications, this is the more relevant one; if your job is designing the systems those applications run on, the Architect exam is. Doing both back to back is reasonable given the shared study base, but do not expect the Developer exam to test general programming skill, and do not sit it expecting the architecture depth of Professional; AWS Solutions Architect Professional is a different tier entirely.
What it costs, retakes included
The voucher is $150 direct from AWS, the standard Associate price, with no free retake. A failed attempt costs another $150 and a mandatory 14-day wait before you can re-sit, so the realistic figure to plan against is $300 rather than $150. Hold any active AWS certification and you earn a 50 percent discount voucher toward your next exam, which can drop a subsequent AWS attempt to $75; that voucher rewards keeping a lower cert active while you build your stack.
Prep does not need to cost much. The DVA-C02 exam guide is the syllabus, AWS Skill Builder’s free tier covers the services, and a reputable video course plus a Developer-specific practice-exam pack runs $30 to $50 together. The practice pack earns its keep because the exam leans on service-specific behavior (Lambda concurrency, DynamoDB capacity modes, deployment strategies) that is easy to feel confident about and hard to actually recall under time pressure. Compare the all-in number against every credential on the ROI Index.
The exam itself
You get 65 questions in 130 minutes: 50 scored plus 15 unscored questions AWS folds in unlabeled to trial future items. Questions are multiple-choice or multiple-response, scored 100 to 1,000, with 720 to pass. The content spans development with AWS services, security, deployment, and troubleshooting and optimization, weighted toward the first two. Expect scenario questions about serverless patterns, API integration, encryption and credential handling, CI/CD with AWS deployment tooling, and reading error output to find the fix. AWS publishes no pass rate, so treat any specific figure you see as fabricated.
Renewing over nine years
DVA-C02 is valid for three years with no annual fee, and AWS’s recertification page lists three routes. The direct one is passing the latest version of the exam. The second is earning AWS DevOps Engineer Professional, which automatically recertifies this Associate credential the moment you pass it, the same way Professional-tier certs recertify the Associates beneath them. The third is the maintain option on AWS Skill Builder, which extends the certification one year at a time and requires a paid Skill Builder subscription; it makes sense mainly if you would pay for that training content anyway, not as a standalone renewal purchase.
Over nine years, straightforward retaking is three sittings. At full price that is 3 times $150, or $450. Keep a cert active and use the 50 percent voucher on each renewal and the two recerts drop to $75 each: $150 plus $75 plus $75 is $300 across nine years. If your career takes you to DevOps Engineer Professional, renewal becomes a side effect of that pass and you spend nothing extra on Developer renewal that cycle, though you should chase Professional because the role calls for it, not to shave a renewal fee. Budget roughly $300 to $450 over nine years if Developer is your ceiling. See certification renewal costs explained for how that compares.
What it does for a developer’s occupation data
DVA-C02 maps most directly to the software developer occupation (BLS code 15-1252), the largest single occupation this site tracks by headcount. The panel here shows that occupation’s current national median wage and employment. That is context about the field, not a raise the certificate delivers: no dataset isolates a wage premium for holding a specific cert, so this page does not invent one. What the Developer Associate concretely does is signal to a hiring screen that you can ship and operate applications on AWS specifically, which matters for the large and growing share of developer roles that are AWS-shaped. The pay attaches to the role and your track record, not to the badge.
Common mistakes
Expecting a coding test. Candidates from a strong general-programming background sometimes underprepare on AWS service specifics, assuming raw coding skill will carry them, and get caught by questions about Lambda, DynamoDB, and IAM behavior that no amount of algorithm practice covers. Study the services.
Skipping the security and deployment weight. The exam puts real emphasis on credential handling, encryption, and CI/CD, not just writing application logic. Candidates who study only the fun serverless material and skim the security and deployment domains leave points on the table.
Letting a lower cert lapse and losing the voucher. As with every AWS exam, holding an active certification is what unlocks the 50 percent discount on your next one. Let it expire and you pay full price for both the next attempt and any retake. Track your expiration date and never pay $150 when $75 was on the table.
Pay less for this exam
The legitimate ways to pay under list price for AWS Developer Associate, verified in the discounts guide. No coupon codes, no gray-market vouchers.
- Passing any AWS exam puts a 50 percent voucher for your next one in your AWS Certification account, valid 12 months, and it chains: each pass earns a new one. Certified holders also get a free official practice set.
- Served in the military? The GI Bill reimburses approved certification tests up to $2,000 per test (check the VA's approved list before booking), and VR&E can cover costs directly for eligible veterans.
- Employed? Ask about certification reimbursement before you pay anything; many employers cover the exam outright or on a pass, and some cover renewals.
- Vendors announce price increases ahead of time and vouchers stay valid for months, so a ready candidate can buy at the old price; increases land in the price watch as we verify them.
