Exactly one row separates these credentials: the occupation each serves. That is not a data quirk. It is the entire comparison, and reading it correctly saves you $445 spent proving the wrong half of a job.
One row differs, and it is the load-bearing one
The CKA maps to computer occupations, all other (SOC 15-1299), the catch-all where platform and cloud-native operations roles land because BLS has no dedicated Kubernetes administrator line. The CKAD maps to software developers (SOC 15-1252), the very large category covering the engineers who build and ship applications. CNCF built two exams because there are two jobs: one person keeps the cluster alive, another person deploys workloads onto it, and in most organizations those are different chairs.
The CKA’s tasks live one layer down: node management, the control plane, etcd backups and recovery, cluster networking. The CKAD’s tasks are the developer’s side of the same platform: defining Deployments and Services, wiring ConfigMaps and Secrets, setting resource limits and probes, and debugging why a pod will not start. A platform engineer, SRE, or infrastructure administrator whose day already involves kubectl against the control plane maps to the CKA. A backend or full-stack engineer whose team runs on Kubernetes, or a DevOps engineer who owns the delivery pipeline, maps to the CKAD.
The money is deliberately a wash
Both exams cost $445, and both fees include something rare in this registry: a second attempt already paid for, plus two Killer.sh simulator sessions with 36 hours of access each, run deliberately harder than the real exam. Both are online proctored, two hours in a live command line against real clusters on Kubernetes v1.35, refreshed to track new minor releases, with 66 percent to pass and zero multiple-choice items. The Linux Foundation publishes the passing score but no pass rate for either, so any percentage circulating on prep sites is invented.
The renewal math is also a mirror. Both moved from three-year to two-year validity on April 1, 2024, with earlier certs grandfathered at three, and both renew exactly one way: pass the current exam again. Staying continuously certified for nine years runs about $2,225 in exam fees on either track, roughly five sittings. Which one hiring managers actually ask for
Here is the honest asymmetry the identical price hides. When a job posting screens on a Kubernetes certification by name, it is usually the CKA, because the roles that filter on a Kubernetes credential are the roles titled around the platform itself: platform engineer, SRE, DevOps, infrastructure. Employers hiring people to run clusters want proof the candidate can run clusters, and the CKA is that proof. Developer postings almost never gate on a Kubernetes certificate; they screen on languages, frameworks, and system design, and Kubernetes fluency is a bullet point the CKAD substantiates in an interview rather than a keyword that gets you one.
That does not make the CKA the default answer. Sitting it for a developer job means preparing for etcd snapshots and control-plane surgery you will never perform, on a live exam that punishes exactly that kind of borrowed ambition, and both exams waste candidates who book without real cluster or deployment hours behind them. It means the tie-breaker is real: if your work genuinely straddles both sides, or you are aiming at platform-titled roles, the CKA is the credential the market names. The CKAD wins only when your job is unambiguously the application side, and there it wins cleanly, because it certifies the work you actually do.
Common mistake
Buying both. The matching price and shared format make the pair feel like a natural set, but that is $890 and two separate two-year retake clocks for one resume. Hold the exam that matches your chair. The other half of the platform can stay a working skill, demonstrated in interviews for free.
