The CKA is the point where Kubernetes stops being a line on a resume and becomes a skill you have to demonstrate under a proctor’s eye. There is no bank of multiple-choice questions to recognize your way through. You are dropped into a live cluster and told to fix it, and the clock does not care whether you have read the documentation or actually lived in it. That format is the entire reason the credential carries weight, and it is also the reason it fails people who show up with study notes instead of shell time.
Who should sit this, and who should not
The CKA is built for the person who operates clusters: the platform engineer, the site reliability engineer, the DevOps or infrastructure administrator whose day already involves kubectl, or the Linux administrator whose shop is migrating workloads onto Kubernetes and who needs to prove they can run the control plane rather than just deploy to it. CNCF sets no formal prerequisite, but the exam quietly assumes you have stood up nodes, debugged a failing pod, and recovered an etcd snapshot before, because it asks you to do exactly those things against the clock.
Skip it, for now, if you have no real container time behind you. This is the most expensive mistake candidates make with the CKA: booking a hands-on lab exam on the strength of a video course and a week of cramming. An attempt without cluster hours is a wasted attempt, and because recertification and the exam itself both revolve around live tasks, there is no shortcut that converts theory into a pass. Skip it too if your job is writing applications that run on Kubernetes rather than administering the platform underneath them; that is the developer’s side of the fence, and the CKAD is the credential that maps to it.
What it costs all-in
The exam is $445, and that price includes something the other credentials on this site mostly do not: one free retake. A CompTIA or Cisco or Red Hat candidate who fails pays the full fee again for a second attempt. A CKA candidate who fails the first sitting gets a second one bundled in, which changes the risk math on a hard performance-based exam considerably. The purchase also carries two sessions of the Killer.sh exam simulator, each 17 questions with 36 hours of access, and the simulator is deliberately harder than the real thing, so working through both sessions is the closest preview of exam pressure you can buy.

The exam itself
CKA is a two-hour, online-proctored, performance-based test taken in a remote terminal, currently built on Kubernetes v1.35 and refreshed to track new minor releases within weeks of each one. You solve a set of hands-on tasks against real clusters, and a score of 66 percent or above passes. There are no multiple-choice items at all. You are allowed one browser tab open to the official Kubernetes documentation during the exam, which sounds generous until you realize that hunting through docs mid-task burns the minutes you do not have.
One structural detail decides more passes than any single topic: most questions run against a specific cluster context, and forgetting to run the kubectl config use-context line at the top of each question means solving the right problem on the wrong cluster and scoring zero for correct work. CNCF does not publish a pass rate, so any percentage circulating on prep sites is an estimate, not data; the 66 percent figure is the passing threshold, not the share of candidates who clear it.
Renewal math over 9 years
Here is the honest change nobody updated their old study guides for: the CKA used to be valid for three years, and as of April 1, 2024 it is valid for two. Certifications earned before that date keep their original three-year window, but anyone certifying now recertifies every 24 months, and the Linux Foundation made the move because Kubernetes ships a nearly new exam every two years. There is no continuing-education path here. You recertify by passing the current exam again.

Staying continuously certified means the initial $445 exam plus a recertification sitting roughly every two years, four of them inside a nine-year window, which is about $2,225 in exam fees if you never let it lapse.
