Databricks’ Generative AI Engineer Associate assesses whether you can design and ship LLM-backed solutions on the Databricks platform: retrieval-augmented generation, model serving, MLflow lifecycle management, Vector Search, and Unity Catalog governance. Who this cert is actually for

This credential is built for practitioners already working in or next to the Databricks ecosystem: data scientists and ML-leaning engineers who decompose a business problem, pick a model and a retrieval strategy, and get the result served and governed. Databricks recommends six-plus months of hands-on experience with exactly those tasks, and while there is no formal prerequisite, the recommendation is honest. The exam assumes fluency with Python-side LLM tooling and Databricks-specific services; someone who has never deployed a model behind Model Serving will feel it.

Skip it if you need AI literacy rather than AI engineering. If the goal is speaking credibly about generative AI in meetings, AWS AI Practitioner at $100 or Azure AI Fundamentals at $99 buy that for half the price with far less study. Skip it too if your organization does not run Databricks and is not about to: this is an ecosystem credential, and its signal is strongest where the platform is. What it costs all-in

Registration is $200 per attempt, online or at a test center, and there is no free retake. Databricks’ own training pathway carries free self-paced components, and the exam guide is public, so a disciplined self-study path is the $200 plus a practice-question set in the $20 to $45 range if you want timed reps; the current exam guide is dated March 2026, so check that any practice material claims coverage of that version, not the 2024 original. The exam itself

You get 45 scored multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, and Databricks notes the live exam may include additional unscored items, so treat every question as counting. Databricks does not publish a pass rate or even a passing threshold, so any specific percentage you read elsewhere is invented. The content is applied: designing LLM applications around a use case, building retrieval-augmented generation pipelines, choosing and chaining models, deploying via Model Serving, managing the lifecycle in MLflow, running semantic search on Vector Search, and governing all of it through Unity Catalog. The proctoring is standard remote or test-center delivery.

Renewal math over 9 years

The certification is valid for two years, tied with the shortest clocks in our registry, and recertification means taking the current exam again at full price. Nine years is four renewals: $200 up front and $800 in re-sits, an $1,000 nine-year cost of ownership on the direct path. That two-year cadence is defensible for a generative AI credential, because the field genuinely moves that fast, but it makes this one of the more expensive certifications per year of validity that we track.

What it does for the occupation you are entering

This certification maps most directly to data-science work, and the occupation-context panel on this page shows the current BLS national median and headcount for data scientists. Read that as a picture of the field, not a payout for the badge: no dataset measures a wage premium for holding any certification, and this site never invents one. What the credential buys concretely is proof of applied generative-AI engineering on a named platform at a moment when most AI resumes list vocabulary, not deployments. Inside Databricks shops and in consultancies staffing Databricks work, that distinction is real. Outside that ecosystem, expect it to read as a strong minor signal rather than a screening keyword: the certification is young, and applicant tracking systems mostly do not filter for it yet.

Common mistakes

Buying it as an AI-literacy badge. This is an engineering exam on a specific platform. If you cannot yet build a RAG pipeline, the $99 fundamentals tier at AWS or Azure is the honest starting point, and this exam is what you come back for.

Ignoring the two-year clock in the budget. At $200 per re-sit with no cheaper renewal path, the sticker price understates the cost of keeping this credential more than almost any certification in the registry.
