Microsoft Azure Security Engineer Associate (AZ-500): Cost, Free Renewal, and the August 2026 Retirement

This is an unusual entry, because we are documenting a certification on its way out. If you are reading this to decide whether to start studying, the short answer for most people is no, and the reason is not the exam’s difficulty or its price. Microsoft has scheduled AZ-500 and the Azure Security Engineer Associate certification for retirement on August 31, 2026. That single fact reshapes every other number on this page, so we lead with it, then explain what happens to people who already hold it and what Microsoft is putting in its place. The retirement is the headline

The Azure Security Engineer certification page carries an explicit warning: the certification, its related exam, and its renewal assessments all retire on August 31, 2026, after which you will no longer be able to earn or renew this certification. Microsoft’s own expiration policy fills in what that means for holders. Nothing is clawed back: an AZ-500 already on your transcript stays verifiable, remains in your active certifications until its normal one-year expiry, and then moves to the historical section. There is no automatic conversion to whatever comes next, and no discount voucher for switching.

What comes next is not a like-for-like rename. Microsoft is redefining Azure security engineering to fold in the protection of AI models, pipelines, and agentic workloads, and the successor credential is the Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate (exam SC-500), which keeps the Defender for Cloud and Sentinel foundation and adds AI-security material on top. If your goal is a durable Azure security credential to carry into 2027 and beyond, that successor, not AZ-500, is the thing to plan around.

Who, if anyone, should still take it

The window is narrow enough that the honest audience is small. Sitting AZ-500 makes sense only if you can realistically pass before August 31, 2026 and you have a concrete, near-term reason to hold the AZ-500 line specifically: a contract clause, an employer checklist, or a partner-competency requirement that names it. Even then, understand you are buying a credential that stops renewing almost immediately.

For everyone else, the calculus points the other way. If you are early in cloud security, the vendor-neutral CompTIA Security+ is a better foundation than a retiring vendor exam, and it carries verified DoD 8140 approval, which no public mapping shows for AZ-500. If you want Azure depth that will still be current next year, wait for the SC-500 successor. If your security work is broader than one cloud, ISC2 CCSP and AWS Security Specialty both outlast this credential’s shelf life.

What it costs

While it lasts, AZ-500 is $165, Microsoft’s standard associate price, set per country and currency with tax in some regions. There is no free retake; a failed attempt is another $165 after a 24-hour wait, with 14-day waits between later attempts. Prep follows the usual Microsoft pattern: a free learning path and a free official practice assessment on Microsoft Learn, so the honest floor is close to the voucher price plus zero. The awkward truth is that spending study hours here in mid-2026 buys a credential with a very short runway, which is the real cost the sticker price hides.

The exam itself

AZ-500 runs 100 minutes and, like other Azure associate exams, may include interactive components performed in a live environment, so hands-on practice is not optional. Microsoft does not publish a fixed question count and cites a typical 40 to 60. Passing is 700 on a 1,000-point scale, and there is no published pass rate. The exam covers four functional areas: securing identity and access, securing networking, securing compute, storage, and databases, and securing Azure using Microsoft Defender for Cloud and Microsoft Sentinel. Renewal math, and why it is unusual here

Normally an Azure associate certification is a one-year credential with a free, open-book renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn, the same fee-free model as AZ-104. AZ-500 followed that model too, right up until the retirement changed the math. Because renewal assessments themselves retire on August 31, 2026, the usual nine-year projection does not apply. Earn AZ-500 in July 2026 and it is valid for its normal one year, but you will not be able to renew it past the retirement date, so it will lapse in mid-2027 with no free assessment to save it and no exam to re-earn it. In plain terms: $165 buys at most about a year of active status, after which the badge becomes a dated line on your transcript. That is the opposite of the durable, free-to-maintain proposition an Azure associate normally offers, and it is the strongest argument for redirecting the money.

What it does for the occupation you are entering

AZ-500 maps to the information security analyst occupation (BLS code 15-1212), which fits the role it describes: implementing controls, managing security posture, and remediating vulnerabilities across Azure and hybrid environments. What AZ-500 buys, for the moment, is a recognized Azure-security line for Microsoft-stack security roles. Common mistakes

Studying for a retiring exam. The most common error in 2026 is starting an AZ-500 study plan without noticing the August 31, 2026 retirement. If your horizon is longer than a few weeks, the successor SC-500 track is where the hours belong.
